Keeping a medication working, not just starting it.

Regular check-ins to track how a medication is working, side effects, and whether anything needs to change, once a prescription is already in place.

Overview

Medication monitoring is the ongoing clinical work around a prescription that is already in place, whether it was started here or by another provider. It covers watching how you respond to it, managing side effects, adjusting the dose, and deciding together when to continue, change, or stop.

This is distinct from choosing a medication in the first place, which is covered under Psychiatric Medications. Appointments here are usually short and regular: more frequent right after a new medication or a change, and less frequent once things are stable.

Who This May Help

Medication monitoring works well in a range of situations, whether your prescription started here or elsewhere.

  • You already take a psychiatric medication and need someone tracking how it is going
  • You started a new medication recently and want closer follow-up while it takes effect
  • Side effects are affecting your sleep, weight, energy, or daily life and you have been putting up with them
  • You take several medications, possibly from different prescribers, and want them reviewed together
  • Nothing about your prescription has been reviewed in a long time
  • You want to reduce or come off a medication, and want that done safely rather than abruptly

What to Expect

A typical monitoring visit is short and focused.

  1. A quick review of where things stand

Your current medication and dose, how long you have been on it, and what has changed since your last visit.

  2. Specific questions

How you are sleeping, your mood, and what the side effects actually look like day to day.

  3. A decision, made together

Continue as is, adjust the dose, change something, or begin a taper, depending on what the check-in shows.

  4. A plan for the next check-in

Timing depends on how stable things are, closer together after a change and further apart once settled.

Medication Monitoring FAQs

How is this different from Psychiatric Medications?

Psychiatric Medications is about starting or choosing a medication in the first place. Medication Monitoring is the ongoing follow-up once one is already in place, wherever it was started.

What if the side effects are not worth it?

Tell your provider rather than stopping on your own. Side effects are a clinical problem with clinical solutions, whether that is a timing change, a dose change, or a different medication.

Can I stop taking my medication?

Yes, and that is a reasonable thing to bring up. It should be a planned taper with your provider rather than stopping abruptly, since some medications cause withdrawal effects if stopped suddenly.

Do I need to have started my medication here?

No. Bring the names and doses, or the bottles, from wherever you were prescribed. Your provider will review what you are taking before making any recommendations.
